This is 8th in a series of posts sharing the photos my grandfather took in 1969 on a business trip to Moscow. For full context, read the start of part 1.
This post showcases photos of the Kremlin.
The Kremlin
Panorama of three photographs stitched together.
User comments:
– Rob, this is an amazing shot, and it looks like a two frame stitched. And, there was not a software to do that 😉
you have to view in the original size.
– Yes I cropped out the borders and stitched it using Windows Live Photo Gallery 🙂 Sorry for making you think he was a technical wizard with photography 🙂
– I’ve never stayed in Rossiya, but I walked those streets 😉
– Ah, the air was certainly cleaner back then – so little traffic!
– Thank you for exhibiting these photos! I’m from Moscow and it’s always interesting to see my homecity through foreigner’s eyes.
From Rossiya Hotel. Tighter zoom than the photos used for the panorama.
West side of the Kremlin. Арсенал “Средняя Арсенальная (Гранёная) башня”
On the far left is St. Basil’s Cathedral. This was taken somewhere on the Rossiya Hotel, perhaps a rooftop observation point? I haven’t identified the rest of the buildings in the picture.
User comments:
– This could have been from his room window. On the other side of St Basils is Red Square. You can see part of the Kremlin on the far left. The large cluster of buildings on the right side of the square is GUM department store
– This was definitely taken from the Rossiya, if you look in the direction of Tverskya (between the Cathedral and the building and past Red Square) up until the skyline you can see the Intourist (under construction) – fascinating…. also notice the absence of skyscrapers in the centre…. so much has changed
From Rossiya Hotel.

– gorgeous photo. so detailed! . love seeing all the little people & trees. and the purples, golds and greens against the vast grey backdrop.
Rossiya Hotel visible at right.
On the left is the Grand Kremlin Palace. If you view the large image you will see “C C C P” across the arches of the building. They have been replaced with crests since the fall of the USSR. To its right is the Assumption Cathedral. Next to the right is the Archangel’s Cathedral. On the far right is the The Secret (Tainitskaya) Tower.
From left: Grand Kremlin Palace, Assumption Cathedral, the Archangel’s Cathedral, the Secret (Tainitskaya) Tower. Тайницкая башня
I’m uploading this more for the buses than anything else. The real subject of the photo is The Sts. Constantine and Helen Tower (Timofeyevskaya), in the Kremlin, Moscow.
Taken from the Moscow River.
